1964 - Establishment of Caritas Medical Centre

The establishment of the Caritas Medical Centre originated from the charitable initiative of the Catholic Social Welfare Bureau, with the aim of providing medical care to the residents of North Kowloon So Uk Estate and Cheung Sha Wan. At that time, there were only 207 general beds and one pulmonary clinic.

Caritas Medical Centre was initially a private hospital and later transformed into a subsidised hospital in its second year. During its early establishment, it provided services in internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and respiratory medicine. In August 1964, the maternity ward service was launched, and the first male infant was born in the hospital on 21 August.
